Chapter 23

“He wants me to bake him a cake.”

Mackenzie was getting ready to close up the shop. She turned around. “Who?”

“Rourke.”

“You finally plucked up the courage to face him?”

“He showed up just as I’d opened, and I wasn’t even open to the public yet.” Her attempts at hiding from him hadn’t gone too well.

“He obviously likes you,” said Mackenzie, eyeing her with a mischievous smile.

“No,” Leigh replied firmly. “He wanted to ask me a favor. He’s having a party. Roxy’s doing the catering and he wants me to bake him a cake.”

“But you’re not a baker.”

“That’s what I told him.” She wasn’t sure why he had asked her; it was one thing liking her cakes, but to have her bake one for a party? She’d been mulling their early morning conversation over in her mind all day and now she worried that she was becoming more paranoid, wondering if he had, somehow, figured out that she had been behind the notes.

“He must really like your cakes then,” Mackenzie offered.

“He does.”

Mackenzie continued to sweep the floor of her shop, then stopped. “Do you think he’s figured out that it wasn’t me?”

“No.”

“He’s a sharp guy. Observant, I’d say. You had to listen to our conversation that day, Leigh. I really didn’t sound convincing.”

She was reminded of Shelly’s remarks about Rourke being happy, and about Shelly thinking he was interested in someone. “Do you like him?” she asked, “because it’s really okay with me. I’m not in Rourke’s league. I really could never hope to catch a guy like—”

“What are you talking about?” Mackenzie cried, dropping the broom handle in surprise. Had she done that on purpose or was that genuine surprise? Shelly had said Rourke had seemed happy, and seeing him earlier today, she’d noticed he’d looked more relaxed. The only thing that had changed between last week and now was that he’d heard Mackenzie confess. And if he was happy because of that, it could only mean one thing.

“Just that…if you are interested in him, you don’t need to pretend or try and hide it from me.”

“I’m not pretending. I’m absolutely one hundred percent not interested in that man. Why do you keep insisting on it?”

She didn’t want to get into a disagreement with Mackenzie over this. They weren’t best friends, not the way she and Shelly were. She hadn’t known her decades long, even though she’d asked her for such a huge favor. But equally, she didn’t want her friend to hold back on her attraction if she was interested in Rourke.

“Shelly said he was really happy. She seemed to think it might have been because he’d met someone.”

“I can assure you it’s not me.” Mackenzie picked up her broom and held onto the handle with both hands. “Leigh. I don’t want to keep hearing about Rourke. I don’t mind hearing about you and Rourke, but there is no me and Rourke, so, please, don’t keep thinking there is.”

“I’m sorry,” she wiped her hand over her forehead. “This has been a difficult few days.
